With an auto trans the torque is put under load in drive.

So I wouldn't try that.
OK.

Not 100% sure what that means. Maybe I’m reading it wrong.

Not sure how putting a car in D, and applying the foot brake is any different than putting it in D and applying the parking brake?

Maybe in 1965, TC’s worked differently, but not to my knowledge. 🤷‍♂️

You should be able to have it in D at standstill indefinitely. Same thing as if you are stuck in a traffic jam. What you cannot do is running the engine at higher revs or holding the car at a steep slope with the accelerator.

Possibly a clutch or brake band was slipping and burnt out eventually. This would have been a faulty gear box to start with.

I have no idea if there is a similar concept involved with a HST,
A hydrostat is a closed loop; it will not speed up heating the oil.
If an unoccupied remote is available, 1 short hose with coupler tips can be plugged into the couplers, and the lever tied back to circulate oil and warm it. This has been done in the ag industry for over 50 years, that I know of.
