    Dirty Inlet Z482

I've had the head rebuilt and new valves ground in. Still won't start so checked compression , virtually zero. Took the head back off and I remember there being a figure for how far above the block the pistons should go at TDC . (protrusion) Anyone know what that is? I think it was about 0.5mm...

    Dirty Inlet Z482

I think it does have that but don't think that's the issue. Trying to work out what's happened to this engine. It was on a rescue launch on a tiny lake near London. I wonder if it's never worked hard. Like I said exhaust fumes coming out the inlet when I was cranking it over so it would appear...

valves are covered in a sooty crust , looks like they’re not seated as the contact surface is black as well this is an inlet valve they’re a mess

I'll take a better look at the valves tomorrow but they looked perfect and lash was spot on. Could it be head gasket? When I took the head off the gasket was in two pieces(layers) but no intermix so probably not that.

    Dirty Inlet Z482

I bought another Beta 10hp marine boat engine not running. I connected it all up and sure enough it turns over , white smoke /vapour out the exhaust but not starting so I'm thinking compression must be bad. I've removed the head and nothing strikingly bad but the inlet ports and valves are...

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

As stated above it was the timing of the helical gear on the crankshaft

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

This shows what I'm talking about The reality with my Z482 is that when the Crank gear is pushed in those 2 dots don't line up so it is somewhat misleading.

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

You were correct Wolfman. I reluctantly took the timing cover off and the crankshaft gear was a tooth out. I know what i did .. When I was rebuilding the engine I lined up the dots when the gear is pushed in on the bevel ..this was wrong, I should have lined up the dots on the front and as it...

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

I’m 99.9% sure the gear timing isn’t wrong I replaced the shim for the pump as it came and it had never been apart but it had sat for years in a boat in fact the shim never left the block , it was stuck so I left it If I got a couple of shims would it be ok to add them one at a time to see if...

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

New head gasket all back together and still have no start and black smoke I should say if it's cool then it'll start pretty well with some heat from the plugs. It's just when it's warmed up to operating temp , shut it off , it does this!! Any ideas what that's pointing to ? Compression still?

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

Well if I just leave the head off I can see the piston is at TDC ..correct?

Is this what I need to do? https://www.jemengines.co.uk/tech-spill-timing

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

I can't see the marks anymore but I could remove the gearbox and bell housing to see them. What's the swash of the head gasket? I measured the thickness of it at 1.7mm , it's metal and 3 layers I think.

    No I haven't , what is that?

Lots of black smoke (hard to start)

Once I'd removed the starter and all the corrosion at the rear it turned easily and no water at all in the engine. You can see I'm not a fan of Beta red paint. Oil cap was the only survivor.
