Thanks, Mike. I am an obvious rookie at mechanical things. I'm absurdly proud that I at least do the basic services on my tractor. My carpentry is rough. I am proud of my pruning skills and now have most of my saws and poles and shears hung on the other side of the wall shown.

Land slopes so much here that this little brick outbuilding has the single-car bay (now tractor) on one level, and you step down into the other side. Hard to get used to my tools on both sides. RichBob, when you say it was very easy to remove the spring, can you explain exactly how? I am used to my pedal finally but this glitch annoys me. BUT I have little mechanical ability. I do my basic services okay, following instructions, pictures, and sometimes with help from here and YouTube!
