The short shaft is a different length between the open and cab model. I know this because I had to order the right shaft for mine.

I have had no damage using it backwards.

I do 13 driveways with gravel. These are on the Lake Huron side. I use my blade backwards until i have a frozen base over the gravel. After that I use the front mount blower. Also fine it handy to back up to a garage door and pull the snow away from it

There is 2 drive shafts. Is the one you talking about the short one ? Did you put something through the blower? When you replace the bolt did it shear right away?

My B2650 also will spin 1/4 turn when in mid position

I never turn the cutting edge around. It will drag the snow just fine in reverse

Some put a vacuum on the fill port and pull vacuum to change the filters. Some do it quick and only lose a small amount. There is U tube videos on how to do this both ways

I have a set that i got last year and am using this winter for the first time. so far I am only using the front cover. I have 3 bars on the temp guage when blowing snow. Not sure if I will need the side covers or not at this point. Would like to add they fit and look nice. Very well made
