Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Hahaha.. as much “fun” as that might be, I’m sure the cruddy coastal commission would have an issue! It takes 6 months or more and a lot of money to just about do anything hard scape wise here. My property is about 50’ inside the coastal zone. Sigh. My neighbor doesn’t worry about it, but I...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

That does seem to be the larger consensus…. But a single extended back blade is the second choice. My only issue was getting the angle up high enough that it was deeper than wide. Nope. Clear it every winter. Sometimes after a big storm (like the one just past), too! Which was why I was...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Not really an option. I’d have to build the land out.. i.e., at the bottom of the turn in the second photo, I have about 2-3’ on the sides. The 400’ drop off on the left, and the stream on the right would be a bit of a problem. And of course, I enjoy my trees way too much to cut that many down!

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Okay, so I underestimated the curiosity of the group.. sorry about that! here are a couple of pics of the trouble spots… rd2 is the easier section, half of it anyway. Rd3 is the worst spot. It‘s also the one that usually causes problems.. the other side occasionally causes issues, but thats...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Hmmm… well, it would get me most of the way. Still a bit shallow of a cut, I could use about half again as much To leave more of the road.. thanks!

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Ha… yea, sorry about that! I got busy, kept forgetting to shoot it, then I had it done. Sigh. didn't think anyone was interested once I got it dug out! and it’s raining again….. so got it done just in time! Hopefully, I won’t lose so much of my road this storm…. The reason I started this...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Well, I think the simple device show in the post by Russel (https://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/threads/mirrors-for-bx.43572/#post-813552) is going to work well for me. The cool thing about something so simple, is that you can vary the end digging component. Mine would be quite a bit...

That actually l that actually looks like it would work just fine for me… and as a bonus, I wouldn’t have to crane my neck to watch it. thanks!

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Well, if you have somewhere to drive the excavator, you could make a trench behind it.… my road runs in and out of trees. Where there are trees, I cant be offset from the road. If I drive down the side of the road, but, have to remain ON the road, the trencher would be trenching in the road...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Yep! Tried that first. There is only about 20 or 30 feet of road that I can turn the tractor. Even without the box on the back.. Sigh. Thanks!

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Huh…. I just can’t see an excavator doing a parallel trench beside a road that has no sides.. All the trenchers I’ve seen have to straddle the trench…. Oh well, when it’s lighter, I’ll take a photo or two…

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

So, yes, it did just occur to me to post a picture or two…. Since it’s o-dark 330 right now, it‘ll be a bit! just some responses to above… sadly, I can not turn sideways for much of the problem area. Even taking off the boxblade doesn’t give me much help. I’ll look at the links provided above...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Hmm.. so, I’d have to straddle the ditch.. or, run the dit right down the middle of the road… naaa…. Just a dirt road, I’m having enough of a problem with runoff down the road because the ditch filled up.. doesn’t take that much of a blockage to cause spill down the road. And about half my...

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

The road turns a corner around the end, and weaves between trees for the next 1/4 mile…. Some is up and down, so I can cut the water away from the road. Sadly though, the trench always fills up with redwood detritus.. funny about that!

Trying to figure out how to trench beside road…

Haha.. I was actually going around them… when the trench gets close, it turns off downhill and away from the road. That part I will probably still need a hoe, but hey… that’s a lot less work! and not all of them are 3’… why, there are quite a few that are only 26”! Seriously though, far too...
