If you don't have anything to worry about hitting the line, I'd run overhead. If I had to bury it, I'd use a flexible line and run it in a PVC pipe.

How many hours on the machine? Since it is a common rail injected engine, it won't have a fuel shut off solenoid like older engines. I'm sure there is a test for fuel return rates that would tell you a lot about the injectors health, but I'd start with getting it scanned at a dealer and look...

Check your radiator as well, not just the overflow tank.

I think you have a different issue that isn't fuel related. When I read your initial post, I was instantly thinking of an overheat issue. Any signs of that happening? Have you checked coolant level lately?

Since it is a common rail engine, will it even have a fuel shut off solenoid? When you say it "labors to turn over", are you saying that it cranks slower?

Shot in the dark, but does your system have any air bleeders in it?

Run the carb dry and don't let it sit unused for a long time and you won't have any issues while running regular gas. Disconnect the battery between uses too.

I have a Honda EU3000i that I would trust to take to the moon to power anything 120V that didn't have a huge inrush current draw. Sips gas and is stupid quiet. But, if you might need to power something with a decent inrush current, a HF Predator 5000 (dual fuel) flat out kicks butt (on gas)...

If you need a generator, I would go with an inverter type. Too many benefits versus the cost difference.
