Since we no longer do christmas we are looking for somewhere to escape for a few days.

Got any ideas?

I live in E TN and I have been throughout the entire SE.......so nothing really interests me or pulls in any one direction.

Thought about the Arch in MO..............

Weather will be a concern also.

What's a hot spot off the beaten path?

I've traveled Tenn some...its a very beautiful state....but if you'd like to see the beautiful Maine rocky coast and or inland with lot of pine trees....and of course Maine has 5 1/2% sales tax...8% food and lodging tax....high unemployment...60% here are on welfare....the roads are crap...every week Rite Aid is robbed for drugs....the liberals passed legal gay marriage last year ,,legal Pot in Portland Maine this year passed....our license plates boasts "Vacation Land"....we love to take tourist dollars and send them home....

So YES the 'arch' in Missouri would be a great vacation..:)

Young bikers pick a destination and go... Old bikers pick a direction and go...

Non refert quo tendas, sed quod iter facias.

The arch is alright, but I've seen it hundreds of times. If it were me I'd go when it's warm out not in December, it is located right on the Mississippi River. Id say a couple hours tops would be all it would take to see what you want to see, at the arch. If it were me I would go in the spring or summer catch a cardinals game, visit grants farm and take the AB brewery tour, then check out the arch.

I hear gulf shores is nice down south. I'm sure their tourism dollars are hurting as well.

What kina stuff tickles your fancy Murph?! You could alway hit I-81 North and run up to Charles Town WV for the Casinos and night life if you're into that sorta thing. A 6 hour drive is doable.

Appreciate that but traveling north has been ruled out, can't get caught in snow and ice and not be able to make it home......got work.

Yeah, I've been up through WV and like it.

We like to explore, old abandoned towns, back roads, mountain hiking.....thought about the OBX and the Chesapeake tunnel again.....but.......been there a few times now.

DC again would be fine but we got a asshole who lives there.......so.......and it's north of me.

I'm from FL so the gulf coast is out of the question.....

North Dakota is Quite nice this time of year............all the tourists have left for the season and all the retired snow birds are heading out in flocks so it gets nice and quiet this time of year.:D

It is especially nice in January when all the hunting seasons are closed and the out of state hunters leave as well, most peaceful time of year here is Jan-mar.

That leaves one whole coast plus the Keys!

Come to Orlando and I'll buy you a beverage of your choice and talk tractors with you while your wife cleans up at the outlet malls... :)

Jump on a plane and hit Vegas, it's warm this time of year and they are more than happy to take your money.

About 6 years ago , my wife and I started a new type of vacation. NO destination, just direction . Pick a direction and drive and stop untill you have to head back. Leave enough time to stop and look, visit on the way back. Mobile Al, the battleship Alabama, 45 minutes SW, Bellingrath gardens. Gibb gardens in Acworth Ga, Silver springs in Fl, Botanical Gardens in Birmingham Al, just to name a few.

That has always been my favorite vacation. Just go. Of course, that was before kids and dogs and cats and rabbits.....

I used to take time off from work, put my go-bag and camera in the truck and start driving. From Pensacola, FL, I went to Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, the Dakotas, Wyoming, .....just about everywhere out west. No clock, no calendar, just went where I felt like going for as long as I felt like going. Ahhh, the good old days.

In all my years of truck driving some of the prettiest scenery has always been off the beaten path and the back roads of the Mid Atlantic region.

Bucket list/retirement goal is to own a road tractor with a sleeper and pull a 5th wheel camper trailer and tour the country side.

Despite the a you mentioned in dc, have you been thru the museum of natural history there?

It's worth a trip, especially for a curious, mechanical mind...

However, we do know that dc is an island surrounded by reality.
