I'm going to guess and I think you have a two speed rear axle and pulling up on it puts it into a lower ratio or locks in a limited slip differential.....

Possible 2 speed axle huh. Would that affect haveing it in 4wd.? The diff lock is on the other side.

It is the Hi-Lo shift lever.
Up position is low range (Gears 1 , 2, 3 and 4)and down position is high range(Gears 5, 6, 7 and 8.)

I am with Dr. Phil and Service Dept Vic. My L1801 has the same type of lever and I call call it a splitter gear in the rear axle. I have used it on mine to do really fine moving as mine also has a 2nd gear reduction on the transmission and you can put the transmission in low and then the rear end and the tractor will creep forward or in reverse so slow that you could literally get off the tractor and still guide the tractor from the ground because it moves ever so slowly.

Thanks, I'll try it and see.
Michael, mine has the trans splitter shifter also. Right above my hand is the pto shifter and just on the other side is the hi- low shifter for the trans. That is what I'v been useing to move slow. I can't imagine this thing goeing any slower that what is does in 1st gear and trans in low.

I knew these guys would come to your aid. That low range should be great for cutting Johnsongrass over there. It's taking my farm over...:D
