I need new tires for my L3600GST. Existing tires read 14.9x24 on 13" rim. The rim reads 12" (stamped in the metal). Can I go with the 14.9x24 again? Or??

What size front tires do you have on it?
The reason I ask is that if they didn't up-size the front tires when they up-sized the rears it will cause wear and/or damage to the 4wd system. ;)

I recently bought the tractor used. It came with new front tires and what appears to be the original back tires. There are 2300 hours on the clock. I can't engage the 4wd so you are probably right on the tire sizing causing problems. But what to do now?

The new front tires are 8x16s and I need to replace the rear tires. Should I stay with 14.9x24s or go with something different?

P. S.
Thanks for your suggestion of spraying penetrating oil where the 4wd linkage enters the transmission but the lever still won't engage.

When people swap tire sizes on a 4wd they really can mess things up! ;)

In your case they have put on too small of front tires and to large of rear tires, throws the gear ratio all out of whack!

Your front should be 8.3-16 and yes there is a RC (rolling circumference) difference between that size and the 8-16.
Your Rear tires should be 13.6-24.

Yes you probably can get away with the front tires being off the little they are but the rears are pushing the front around.

Now as far as why it won't shift into 4wd, that could be a direct result of binding or worse yet damage to the drive from being the wrong ratio.

Jack up the front axle to get just one tire off the ground, while someone turns the tire back and forth work the 4wd lever to see if it will engage the drive, caution do not run it in 4wd till you fix the tire miss match!
