Tachometer on 1999 L35

I just bought an older L35 (750 hrs) and found that the tach doesn’t register accurately (~1k at full throttle.) Any ideas on a fix? I saw a post about just bypassing with aftermarket tach, but would like to repair/ troubleshoot, if possible.

1999 L35 with only 750 hours?
Must be in decent condition.

Very few options here,
Check cable for and drive gear.
Sending tach it to a speedo shop, would be pricey

Thanks WDLanning and Wolfman. 3 ft of snow and 10deg have kept me off the tractor for the moment. I will check cable and let y’all know what I find.
