Steering Boot - Quick Question

So, I apparently bent up my steering cylinder guard, which ate up the rubber boot. Guard must have done it's job, because nothing else looks wrong. Would be curious to know when it happened; noticed it last night. Bleah. The tractor should be in my details, but it's an L3940 HST-3.

Anyway, I found the boot (35080-44680) for $17. Not bad. (that's the right boot, right?)

I do have a question about the rings (35533-62860). Where do they go? Do they just go inside the seal to keep it from collapsing and getting pinched (I think it's this one)? OR do they hold the seal on, on the cylinder end?

Thanks,
Andy

The rings go on either end to hold and semi seal the boot.

This is all I found:

The most difficult part of the job was getting the larger of the two metal circle clips back over the largest end of the dust cover. The small one was easy because all you had to do was squeeze it with your pliers. The larger one was a pain because there was no apparent way to easily work it on and off.
So that, with with N.I.W. says, I guess it's a clamp.

Should be horrible fun.

Just missing the small ring/clamp on the end of the boot. ;)

Here is the part# from a BX22D Manual-

K2561-01630 JOINT AXIAL BALL 2, they don't sell the boot by itself. What is the diameter of the smaller threaded piece I will check mine with the calipers and let you know. The design is poor, but better than nothing....I have read that others use a section of bicycle tube cut and put in place after separating the threaded portion and securing it with heavy duty cable ties. just count the number of exposed threads before you take it apart so you can get it back to the same location or hit the threaded area with spray paint then you know where to stop on the threads.

They do sell just the boot.

The Ebay boots are a scam and a rip off, they do not seal out moisture or dirt!

I just installed the ebay boots. They are open on one end but use pressure from the closed end to keep a "seal". I'm not 100% confident in their ability but the factory design and rubber quality is also crap imo so it's worth a shot.

If the joint is properly greased the ebay boot should do its job and outlast the factory setup.
