Most of the ash trees in my parents yard have shelf fungus. Can it be treated or do they just get cut down as they die

Shelf fungus can be an an indication of rot.
Do the trees appear otherwise fine? In some areas emerald ash borer is killing nearly all the ash.

Emerald ash borer hasn't hit the area yet. They've had the shelf fungus for about 20 years. Most of the ash trees look fine but it is starting to take a toll on a few of them. There's a clump of them in the back that's had it the longest. I'll probably take that whole mess down when I'm home for Christmas. Some of the others should be thinned.

Ash doesn’t last “forever” like maple or oak. They may be slowing down and getting feeble. It’s a faster-growing species that comes into full sunlight in new forest succession. They don’t like shade. Black Cherry is same way...once it gets to 24” or so DBH, it tends to start falling apart, literally.

I did a few timber sales on my employer’s property a few years ago, focusing on the ash. Maybe 100k Board feet just to get it while market was good.
EAB is a nasty one...

Be patient, it will. I've kept 2 ash trees going for the last 10 years with Baer tree and shrub insecticide and fertilizer but last year both crowns were getting pretty sparse. We will see this spring. Fingers crossed. My county extension agent stopped by to look at them and he said I have the only 2 survivors in the entire county.

Might not make it another year, will see. I know the woodpeckers have been working on them overtime this winter.

There is some treatment for the Emerald Ash Borer problem. Do a search and you'll discover some satisfactory answers other than firewood.

True - good point. Don't recall specifics, but seems to help yard trees.

Given many have had shelf for 20 years, obviously not related to EAB. They may just be getting old or distressed...if in a lawn, maybe compaction is getting to them, etc...

What's the trees' size? Are they big/small? Ballpark, what's their diameter ~4.5 up? Do you have a picture of any of them?

They're all older than I am and I'm 48.The big ones are around 20 inches at the base.
