I was going to mention that. Often bulk oil was put in those containers without a cap and placed outside to collect dust and whatever. For the really frugal customers, used oil was available.

Blackstone Laboratories collected vintage oils in sealed containers and did testing on them, the results and final conclusion was that they were pretty good. Ebay oils If you don't want to read all three newsletters, skip to the end of the third one for the conclusion.

The tolerances used to build the new engines were actually quite good, the wear problem mainly came from poor filtration of air and oil, for example my 1949 Chevy had no oil filter and the air filter was just metal screening that kept out bumble bees and the larger road stones.
I also do remember that "filtered" used oil was available.
It was less expensive!

Dryden was my go to for everything back in the day. Oils were great products for everything from heavy equipment to my drag cars. Their greases were top notch products. Castrol bought them out and changed the line to Castrol HD I believe.
The Dryden name is now back, acquired by reladyne, a company based in Johnstown pa.
Fantastic lubricant line is now back. Now have to find a distributor.
And by the way what happened to the newbie that was making it a point to tick off the moderators. Guess he realized it was best to shut up. 🤣

Not so fast my friend.

The wear problems we experienced back in the day were primarily caused by oils that broke down in service. Nothing in the Ebay Oils formulary analysis addresses⁰ those properties. The API bench and engine performance testing requirements for modern oils do.

Have Kristen send suitable quantities of those old oils off to a lab like SWRi that does those sorts of performance tests and you will see those old oils cant hold a candle to modern oils in terms of ckeanliness, wear protection, and chemical stability.

Thats why modern engines that are much harder on oils dont suffer from the sludge, deposit and premature wear problems that plagued older engines using those older oils.

Here I thought that positive crankcase ventilation verses road draft tubes improved the atmosphere in the engine. I mistakenly thought that a fair amount of said sludge came from lead in gasoline and unleaded gasoline wouldn't add to that part of the problem. I also thought that modern engines running at much higher temperatures helped to evaporate moisture and fuel contaminants so they would pass thru the PCV system and be eliminated.

All of the above. But those old oils still can't pass the current sludge and deposit tests run on engines that include PCV, EGR, and higher engine temperatures. Some versions of the tests are even conducted using leaded gasoline for increased severity.

Each iteration of API test requirements raises the bar and there have been many iterations since the introduction of PCV, EGR, and unleaded gasoline. Current levels are largely acheived with improvements in base oil refining and additive chemistry.
