Just replaced the factory muffler on my trusty old M4500, it was cracked at the bottom of the shell where it clamps to the manifold. I can't believe how much obstruction there is in the factory muffler. Not only does it neck down when it goes into the muffler shell, but there are also at least two perforated cross tubes that fill nearly the whole center passage. With the extension pipe removed there is barely a glimmer of light when you look through. On top of that the outlet pipe is smaller than the inlet. Seems like not a lot of breathing room for a 55 HP diesel. Replaced it with a version that is 2 inch straight through, be interesting to see how much difference there is next spring cutting hay.
Have to admit, the old factory style canister was quiet though.
