Renting a trailer for a L2501

It'll be rare that I need to tow the tractor, but I'd like to know if anyone rents a trailer by the day (U-haul, etc) to move the tractor vs. buying a decent trailer, then licensing it, then insuring it, etc. I get a utility trailer for about $30 when I need to move the side by side, but I think the tractor is too big for a 6x12 u-haul. Any other options and size suggestions? I can put the box blade in the back of the F250 so it would just be the 2501 and the loader.

Call you local rental yard. The ones that rent every tool you can think of. They'll probably have something you can rent by the day, three days, or week.

Most rental yards have trailers & Uhaul has car haulers that would work. No buddies with a trailer ?

Re: Renting a trailer for a 2501L

U-Hauls car haulers, are open center floors. They might work depending on the track width of the machine. Those are only like $60-$70/day or so. Tie down/load securement points, might be a little difficult to do correctly, since they use a proprietary built in system.
U-Hauls open utility trailers (they all have sides), have tail gates that are narrower than the width of the actual trailer floor. I asked why this was, and it's because people would rent them since they are cheaper than the car haulers, and then load cars on them. Their fix was to make the tail gate narrow.
When I bought my B8200, I used an enclosed double door U-Haul trailer, and some car ramps to drive it into the trailer.:D Worked pretty good, not ideal, but it worked. No ROPS on that machine BTW.
Couple "First Place Rentals" (same type of place the D2Cat mentioned) around, that rent trailers of varying capacities, for $100/day or so.

I called the local equipment rental place and they don't rent trailers. :(

U-all has tandem axle open bed trailers with surge brakes. I've used them before. Should be fine for your tractor. Not sure if they have a ramp but any hill will work.

Yep to heavy.

What does it weigh?

Our tractor is (yours might vary by how it is set up)

L2501D HST = 2623
L525 = 805
Filled rear tires= 480
10 gallons diesel = 70

So our tractor weighs 4,000 lbs

Re: Renting a trailer for a 2501L

U-haul's largest open trailer is a two-axle 6x12. That easily accommodates the width of your tractor but I think 12 feet would be not enough for the length of the tractor and loader. The U-haul trailer has sides on it including on the front. They list a max payload of just over 2600lbs. That's likely not quite enough for your tractor.

Realistically, if you were to buy a trailer, you would need a tandem-axle trailer with at least 3500lb axles under it. The minimum length I would go for is 16' but preferably even longer to help accommodate 3-point attachments. I understand your reluctance to buy a trailer for the couple of times a year you might need to move your machine. Perhaps a place that sells trailers would be willing to rent you one. Home Depot rents trailers, but I think only small ones.

I hauled an L3250 a few hundred miles in a stock trailer. I just removed the upward pointed exhaust. It pulled nice, being a gooseneck.

What about hiring a car carrier to do the job? That doesn't require owning or renting a trailer, or having a towing capability on your own vehicle. And there are zillions of these available for hire. They probably can get into more spots than trailers, too.

I've been wondering about this for the occasional remote task. Does it turn out to be much more expensive?

It's a reasonable idea, and they certainly will do it, but it seems like it always costs an arm and a leg.

maybe try a neighbour, friend and pay him to haul it for you

I'd be towing >50 miles each way. Hiring a rollback would be sweet, but $300 per trip aint gonna cut it. Calling a couple of Herc/Sun Belt shops sounds like my best move.
