Hi y'all. I always say, when the going gets tough join a forum. The shared knowledge and wisdom is amazing. I am sure that "Orange Tractor Talk" is no exception.

Up to this point I have only had to do the regular maintenance on my Kubota L175. I use it for mowing with a 4ft shredder and pulling the chicken house around. It's pretty light duty stuff. It has a over 2500 hours on it and that might be low. I bought it second (third) hand and I found safety yellow on the frame under the controls so I assume it was used by a construction crew or a school. There is no doubt in my mind that it has had a hard life. That said it has worked quite well up till today.

I had been thinking I had been hearing a noise when mowing. I know what you are thinking "they are pretty noisy with the shredder going" but this is different. You know how you can tell, when you use a piece of equipment a lot that it sounds different? Well it sounded different.

On the day before yesterday I was mowing some pretty tall Johnson grass and it got kind of hot. Some transmission oil bubbled out of the gear selectors. I cut the mowing short and put the tractor away. Today I took the tractor to the field in some not too tall grass and engaged the mower.

I mowed a path of maybe ten feet and the PTO caught and shuddered. I disengage the clutch and then gently tried to engage the clutch with the tractor out of gear. It tried to spin the PTO then it jerked and popped so I didn't try it again. The problem is in the PTO not the shredder.

My thinking is that a bearing(s) have turned loose. It is just a feeling and I won't know until I get in there.

It has been over 38 years since I split a tractor back in diesel mechanics class. I hope i am up to the task.

It's a nice little tractor and does everything I need it to do. I hope it is reparable and that I can find the parts.

Welcome to the forum
There are several threads about restoring L175 tractors on the forum. I think you will be able to search for those but may have to use more than L175 for the search string.

I believe Aquaforce has a very good restoration story on here.
I have a L185 and have been able to get most parts from the Kubota dealer or on line from Messicks or Coleman

Kubota.com has a very good on line parts manual to find part numbers. You will need the tractor serial number to select the correct part numbers at times
If you can't figure it out search for illustrated part list on the forum for instructions
Good luck and I am sure some others will be along to give you better assistance

Well, I took the first step and ordered a repair manual. That will give me a better idea of what I am looking at. I am actually a motorcycle mechanic. The principles are the same (except bikes don't have PTOs) but the items are in different places and a little bit more robust.

I am thinking of this as a winter project. I can clear the floor space in the shop and split the tractor if necessary.

I will look up the L175 build threads. It will be good reading and it should point me in the right direction.
