I think I initially posted this in the wrong place:eek: ... so here we go once again....

OK All.... her is the 64 thousand dollar question.... Does anyone have any recommendation for preventive maintenance on the Kubota mid mount mower gear boxes other than just checking the oil level every 10 hours.

From what I have read my issues with literally blowing the bevel gears to shreds... is a common problem after around a 1000 hours. Also... once you hear the metallic gear box whine... may as well get your wife's credit card out... This is what I did... hehehe:cool: !

First...I was surprised to see there were no thrust bearings on the vertical blade shaft... just a regular ball bearing.

Do any of you all ever pull the box and change out the output shaft oil seal BEFORE it leaks?

Let's say we wanted to rebuild the gear box with new bearings and seals and REUSE the bevel gears. How do you use the shims to set the backlash?

My new gear box is working great!:D

That is exactly what I did... I used Mobil 1 LS dif oil... I am looking into attaching a remote thermal transducer on the box and monitoring the operation temp...

How much oil does that require? Fill to the cap?

What we really need to come up with is a small clutch on the mower drive shaft so it will slip rather than destroy the gears.

I have one that is also toast...

Oil fill in MMM gear box? There are two bolt plugs on the side of the box. The bottom bolt drains the oil whereas the upper bolt IS THE MAX OIL FILL LEVEL. Add oil in the top fill plug and when it starts to run out the max fill level hole.... Stop and button everything up.

On some of the marine outdrives a extra cost add on remote oil reservoir is available, to prevent the 90 degree bevel gears from destroying themselves if the lube level gets low. Funny how the top box gears on a particular outdrive look just like the destroyed gear from a Kubota when the lube is low.....

I wonder how it would work to rig up a remote clear reservoir and flexible hose to the gearbox, that way you can monitor the oil level in real time.

Just a thought, David

Here is a link, (not my auction) to such a kit
