How long can you expect them to last ?

I am more concerned with older models.

I have a bit of John Deere made by Yanmar experience. I have a JD 655 and a parts tractor. Made between 1986 and 1990. The meter on the running tractor blew up this year with 890 hours and the parts tractor has just over 700 hours on it and it is blown. So I suspect the John Deeres did not have longevity.

So was wondering how long you might expect older Kubotas to last.

I do not know if the JD 655 meters were Japanese or not.... tractor is mostly Japanese with Sunstrand hydro. The hour meters are mechanical cable driven and I can not say if they are Japanese made.

My L1801DT shows 1130 and since the tractor is torn down I do not know if it is working.... but I doubt it is correct.

I expect mine to continue working until the tach fails but the cable will probably fail first and get replaced. Both mine are mechanical. being an old fart I don't like electronic anything. Not much in there to fail actually.

Have two B7100s.....the 92 model is working well, the 90 model did not work.....only to find out that the PO must have unhooked it...working fine now!

Off the subject ....bought a pontoon boat that came with an hour meter....asked the company selling the boat, is that how many hours are on the engine? He said the engine was changed 6 years ago......

after installing a radio and being under the dash....I kept hearing a "buzzing" .......the @#$#@#@% hour meter was hooked straight to the battery ....so ....24/7/365 or until a battery was replaced! and yup it was working fine!;)

The hour meter on my B7100 lasted aprox 1800 hours then died. Really unfortunate, not sure how much it devalues the tractor but it must bring the value down some.

The cable-driven mechanical tach/hourmeter on my late 1970s M4500DT has just clicked over 5000 hours :D My brother had it for quite a few years before me and didn't have any problems with it. It seems to be accurate. Like anything else reliability depends on the user - the tractor hasn't been worked hard in dusty/gritty environments, it is garaged, the cable is free of kinks and sharp bends, and (except for one spot I need to fix) doesn't rub on things that damage the protective plastic casing etc. I don't think it has been lubricated ever, but probably could do with it.

My 1979 B7100 meter is still working, 1430+ hrs.

The hour/tach cable failed in my ‘86 B7200 at 1032 hrs. IIRC, the replacement cable was $21 from the dealer. Not too difficult to replace, but it did require removal of the steering wheel so I could access the back of the meter.

Hour meters (elapsed time) are very important to me because I base all my service on them. How do you determine the elapsed hours for service when the hour meter isn't functional?

I put a new functional hour meter in tractor. Point I was trying to make is, not having original functioning meter devalues tractor if I was trying to sell it.

I wouldn't think it would devalue it very much. I work in the rental buisiness and we are constantly replacing hour meters on some of the older equipment.

I've had some folks walk away from buying a used piece of equipment because the hours weren't right. But sold the same piece of equipment the next day to someone else for what we were asking for it.

I'm always up front though that the hour meters been replaced. My biggest concern is if a piece of equipment has been regularly maintained.

It's not much of an issue with newer equipment that has an ECM since the ECM stores the hours. The only time the hours aren't correct is if the ECM ghosted and has to be replaced.
