So my L3800 came with 1 air filter. I see that a 2 filter setup is an option.

If I want to run 2 filters, is it as simple as just buying the optional Inner filter and putting it in? Looks that way, but want to confirm before ordering one.

If it's like my L3000 you will unbolt the entire air filter assembly and replace it with the new dual filter assembly. Nothing will need to be modified, it's a complete bolt on part. My opinion, it's worth every penny.

Agree that the dual filter option is worth the expense and effort.

But also somewhat depends on your operating environment. Especially valuable if in dry dusty construction areas but perhaps less so if in lush green yard- or park-like use.

One problem with air filters is that they are changed too frequently. Filter is designed to operate optimally (actually stopping the highest percentage of smallest particles) after some initial loading occurs. 'Overfiltration' is a recognized and detrimental problem for all engines. With this in mind I tend to run ours about twice as long as the hour-use change chart suggests and have had excellent results over many years with no traceable engine problems in multiple tractors.

The ONLY time I've ever had a clogged filter (so bad engine wouldn't crank or run) was after using machine in heavy smoke in brush fire. So dense it was smothering truck and pump engines too.

I use mine mowing grass and bush hogging - when bush hogging the tractor (and me) get covered with dust, pollen, crap.

What's confusing about the parts diagram above is that only the inner filter is listed as "option". I'd think that if it required a different housing it would be listed as well. That's what's got me stumped.

Anyone out there with an L3200/3800 that can confirm this?

Number9, does your tractor already use a radial seal air filter or does it have the type that is secured with a wingnut on the end?

If it already uses a radial seal filter you may just need the add the inner filter and be done with it.

It looks exactly like the one in the diagram. I guess I'll just order them both when I place the order and see how it shakes out.

I have an L3700 and added the inner filter. No mechanics involved, simply insert into housing along with stock outer filter, close it up and done.

At 218 hours I had Blackstone test the oil. Both silicone and insolubles were below average indicating good air filtration. I operate in dust a good bit of the time.

I ordered both air filters and put them in today when doing the 50hr maint. They went in same as the single filter does, no issues.

Just FYI. I know this is an older thread, but someone who just entered may have the same question I did. My 2013 L3800 came with 1 air filter. Secondary air filter will simply slide into primary filter with no parts or additional time. :)

Good information to know! ;) I'm planning on doing this on my L3200 pretty quick. Mainly just use mine to mow the yard, but can get dusty at times. It's cheaper to get the inner filter now than to pay more later!
