Did some brush hogging for the first time this spring a few hours ago. When I got done, I couldn't get the PTO to disengage. The lever moves freely, but in the off position the PTO still operates. Any suggestions what to look for?

Mine did that once. After lubing the lower end of where the cable goes, all was just fine. Sorry I can't provide a detailed description of "where the cable goes" but I can't get a clear picture of it. That was a year or two ago and apparently my brain purged the image:)

I had an L series that did that. I took a can of WD-40 and sprayed it on the top of the cable as well as lubricating the bottom side of it. After that, it became a part off my regular maintenance and I would lube it regularly.

Mine had the same problem years ago. There was something in how the cable was attached at the transmission that was not releasing properly. 5 minute fix; no problems since.

Had the same issue with my L3800. Found the arm, where the lower end of the cable attaches, was very stiff. The arm goes into the transmission case. Sprayed some lube and worked it a little and it freed up. Now part of normal maintenance routine.

This just (this week) happened to me as well on my L3200. I had just finished a long spell of bush hogging. The cable would 'pull' to engage, but not 'push' to disengage. Some Silicon spray took care of it.
