I am in the process of building a firewood processor and it is going to have a hydraulic winch to pull the log into it and move it to be cut. I have been tossing around the idea of adapting an old electric winch drum to the hydraulic motor so that I can have a freespool option but was wondering if a hydraulic valve with float would work as a freespool when it is in the float position. Would this work or would there be too much restriction for the motor to freespool easily.

My reaction is that you want to disconnect the winch drum from its gearing in order to achieve the free spooling.

By not doing the above, you are having to turn the high ratio gear train in reverse....

Put an electric hydraulic valve on it, then connect a wireless remote. Then you can just power out.
