My gears often grind when shifting and I'm wondering if the fact that my clutch travel has never been adjusted might be playing a role.

I'm reading the manual but don't understand...

"Slightly depress the clutch pedal and measure free travel at the top of the pedal stroke"

What does that mean? Is it as simple as putting a ruler at the top of the clutch pedal and measuring how far the top of the pedal moves?

When you first push on the clutch pedal the only resistance you feel is stretching the return springs. After a short distance you should encounter a much greater resistance when the throwout bearing starts to push the fingers of the pressure plate. You measure the distance the top of the pedal travels till you feel it start to push the greater resistance of the pressure plate.
It is possible that a clutch be so far out of adjustment that you have no free play and you will not feel the change in resistance.
