well a very clean G 4200 with a 44 inch deck came up for sale locally. I can buy it for $300. It has a broken? rod. I have found rods available. I am figuring on tearing it down, good inspection, new bearings, hone cylinders, replace rings and reassemble. Possibly replacement engine. Really worst case waste 300 bucks.

Any thoughts experience with this, would it be worth while.

With a broken rod... plan on a replacement engine. Basically... when the parts go flying... and depending on where it breaks... it will beat the crap out of the cyl, block, or crank journal. OR... it will come though the side of the block. And, with an iron block... I wouldn't try to repair it.

But, like you said... it's only $300, and if you decide to not fix it... I'm sure you can part it out and make more than the $300 back. (so it's low risk)

well no hole in block, good, my thought was if it broke right at the big end journal there could be no damage inside. also the head is off, I might be able to see the cylinder
