1984 B6200 charge light stays on. Would appreciate some troubleshooting tips to determine if the dynamo is working properly and if the voltage regulator is working.

Make sure the belt is tight on the alternator, look for loose connections, with engine running see if you get about 14v at the battery.

As both have said - place a meter across the battery - ENGINE off - should read 12.4+

Now start - (clip on leads help) At idle there is NOT a big increase in voltage, as you increase the idle the volts will climb up - at WOT the charging system will read something close to 14.5 volts.

Now that is AT the battery, if not testing at battery - switch to AC on your meter at the two leads that run along the engine to dash. IF readings go up there with RPM, then you voltage regulator is at fault.

AS was said - check belt - cables .....etc....

report back your findings

Thanks for the suggestions. I replaced the cable from the battery to the starter and checked the fusible link on the hot wire to the starter. The wiring diagram has been a big help. I have cleaned all the connectors and have narrowed it down to the issue is either the dynamo or the voltage regulator. Voltage to the battery is 12.5 engine off and engine running. The voltage on the wires out of the dynamo is all over the place, but a regular 12v test light is dim at idle and brighter as the RPM is increased which leads me to believe the dynamo is working. Can anyone offer a better way to test the dynamo? Next step is replacing the regulator - I just hate to spend the money if it is not going to solve the problem. Thanks again to all who have posted.

Go back up to post #2. Voltage at dynamo is AC. Have to have your meter set to AC or your reading an error.

Testing at dynamo, would each wire be putting out 20 volts ac?just curious.
the 20 volts, (mine was a little higher) IS an AC voltage, so the 20 is on both at the same time, like you have 120v in your outlet at your house. The 20v is bouncing back and forth, so both need to be in the circuit to get the 20v. To get techinical, it is 20 volts rms. (route mean square) but that stuff gets deeeeep!:D:)

"Voltage to the battery is 12.5 engine off and engine running" - did you run up the RPMS????? Mine will sit right on 12.4 at idle.....and stay there foreevvvver!! AND as soon as I increase throttle, it climbs. ;) 14.5 at WOT.

Thanks again. Checked across the two gray wires coming from the dynamo and had 10 amps at idle and 20+ at 2000 rpm. Looks like it is the regulator. Found one at Griggs Lawn and Tractor. Anyone have any experience with that supplier?

Again - all of your input is appreciated. (Better guidance than I got at the dealership here in town!)

Hello all, im not trying to hi jack this post but i am have a very similar issue with my B6200. The charge light stays on for apx. my first 20 min of use. Ive followed your recommendations on the troubleshooting. 1. i had the battery checked out and its good. 2. i have a apx. reading of 12.5v on the battery not running. 3. the dynamo is putting out about 18 volts at idle and 21.5 at normal throttle. 4. battery volts while below 2k rpm is 13.1 i ran the rpms up and it finally went to 14.4. i normally operate the machine around 2k rpms. I'm thinking that i may just not be running the machine hard enough? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
