I can start it cold by holding the glow plug switch for 30 seconds. No issue cold. The issue is... like today, 70 degrees, out tilling garden. Mid way through, I take a break, idle her down, and let her idle a minute or so, then shut her off. Literally 2 minutes later, get back on and she does not want to start. Use glow plug switch for 30 seconds and she'll fire up.

This has happened over a dozen times. Work hard, idle her down, and shut her off. Wait 2 minutes or as long as a day, and I always have to use the glow plugs for 30 seconds to get her to fire. My other Kubota fires right up after I shut her off when she is warm.

Suggestions?

A couple things come to mind. First off, compression. Is the compression lever out just a little? This is the easiest thing to verify. Check it at the engine, as the cables can cause fits over time. If not the lever, you could be loosing compression in the cylinders from wear and tear. The second thought is with your injectors. If the injectors aren't atomizing the fuel enough, it will take more heat to get the fuel to get going. The compression is easier to check, the injectors really need to be checked by the pros.

Compression is good. It is just a hard starter, and blows black smoke when it finally fires (warm or cold). What is that a sign of?

Black is un-burnt fuel.

SO Killerbee theory about the injector is probably true? Can these injectors be cleaned, or do they need replaced? If replaced, I have not found a place to buy injectors at a very reasonable price. Any suggestions?

I believe that the owners manual I have (B7100), states that the glow plugs have to be used whenever it is started. Mine isn't a cream puff, and it smokes black when started, (I thought that was normal for a diesel.) But it has good oil pressure and seems to have been taken care of.
I just thought it was a neccessity to pre heat the engine.
Good luck.

If I shut my B7100 of for 5 minutes I must use the glow plugs, it starts in a heartbeat every time I use them, if I don't use them even after running it a while it cranks quite a bite before it starts.

Doe it run well once started, does it always start with the glow plugs, does it have plenty of power, and does the smoke clear? If all these are true I wouldn't touch the injectors.

Just my opinion and I am no expert.

My B8200 is the same way. I don't have to hold the plugs on for 30 seconds maybe 10 seconds with a warm engine. Runs great once running with no blow by, smoke and lots of power. Never had this starting issue with my B6200. I was going to replace the battery and clean out the starter to see if I could get some more umph. Also am going to check the valve clearance. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast like others have mention.

It runs AWESOME when running and exhaust shows no smoke at all unless it is working under a VERY HEAVY load then you barely see a slight black, you lessen the load and it immediately goes away and runs clear again. Turn it off after working, warm, or hot, and it is hard to start.
