Hey Grump, have you described how you do the blasting? I'm guessing you must do much of it, like the differential; front-end; etc., by shrouding the workpiece. I'm curious how you control the dust and how you contain and recover the media.
We did not media blast the engine, front axle, gear case or anything on the chassis. I've done all the prep work myself on those parts so no need to shield anything. I dought there's anyway possible to control the dust that's created while media blasting, in my case outside in the wind so dust went everywhere.



Painting will proceed over the weekend inside

Alrighty we have some color now, it's bright glossy and Orange. I did not have enough room to bring everything home this weekend. I got the loader sub frame, 1 rear wheel, both front wheels and a couple small pieces and I'll get the rest of the parts next trip. We used 2 quarts of paint on the sheet metal and we have plenty left to do the loader assembly and bucket.

We spent most of today working on the loader bucket. It's not as bad as we had thought it to be. There's major pitting on the inside but that won't hurt anything. It took a lot of heat and hammering to get the bucket back in shape, not perfect but close as we could get it.

I've got a few more things to take care of then it's time to paint the chassis and that will be early on next week. I'll let everything set and cure for a few days.

I didn't get pics of the bucket before we straightened it out. We have some welding to do on the lower lip before it gets media blasted. We couldn't find any cracks and all mounting locations look good but again, won't know for sure until it's blasted.

Thanks, I have my dad to thank for doing such awesome paint work, he's done this many times in the past.

I could not do this for a living, no way.

Here's some of the parts that made it home with me today. I've already removed the covering from the wheels. I'll paint the wheel lugs blue somehow later on and clean the tires too.

Wasn't it YOU a few pages back telling us you wasn't concerned about paint details 'cause you was going to use it in the woods?

If so, you'll be moving at the pace of a snail, driving like the proverbially old lady on her was to church.

Oh I guess it was me that said little details didn't matter, but that was before anything was painted. Everything turned out so good it would be a shame not to add some detail here and there.

Drive it to church? that's what the Benz is for, it moves a wee bit quicker.

I guess so considering I just watched a 1977 B7100 worn completely out with heavy blo-by, worn out tires, beat up and rusty hood, leaking loader hydraulic cylinders and who knows what else.

It blew my mind when it sold for $4,050 on eBay.

Yeah I feel much better knowing that.

The loader frame is completely dismantled and all parts media blasted. We did not blast the hydraulic lines, cylinders or the control block, I'll have to clean everything myself so I brought all of it home this weekend. There are 3 flex lines that don't look to good and I'm going to see if our local shop can make some new ones.

The loader frame parts are primed and ready for a fresh coat of paint and my dad will paint them later in the week.
The fluid in the resevior was nasty when I drained it. It was a light pink color kind of like strawberry and it was full of water, time to flush the system.

The filter screen was 95% clogged and I don't see how the loader was working at all. I'll clean the filter and leave it in there but I'm leaning more towards a remote spin on filter for both hydraulic systems.

Oh yeah, I've got a nice blue chassis now but more about that later.

I carefully removed all of the decals from the loader frame and stashed them with my other decals so I can have them reproduced by our local shop.

I'll have a total of 16 various decals made including the shift plate on top of the trans tunnel, I dought any of these are available from the dealer.

I think they are probably available from the dealer. I got almost every sticker for a L185 (circa 1980?) from the dealer.

Looking good!

You might as well just bite the bullet and replace all of the hoses while you're doing it. Then they'll all be new and you won't ever need to worry about them again. Plus new ones will look better....

Too bad you're not having the steel lines chromed while you're doing it.

Depending on the manual vintage, the recommended fluid for the B219 is 30w motor oil or ATF. Yours appears to be ATF with a heavy side of H2O. I run Napa's Kubota rated hydraulic fluid, but I know a guy who runs 90w gear oil- says it leaks less & is cheaper than seals. Maybe if it starts leaking more, he can run 140w.:rolleyes:

Most of your hoses are domestic fittings. The ones in photo are npt, easily made in your local hydraulic hose supplier. I Suspect other ends are jic.

What makes you suspect that?
It's a fairly common arrangement for hydraulics of the era, unlike modern hydraulics where you have a ton of standards across the manufacturers. It looks like Kubota didn't go too trendy on the modern stuff, so I like that when it comes time to re-hose my L3200 (Hopefully two or three decades from now).

My D-17 is pretty much NPT into hard lines and JIC into about everything else. Where I get screwed up is the angle of the flare. It's sometimes hard to tell a 45° SAE fitting from a 37° JIC fitting. Then you get the seats which can handle both angles...

Did I just say the older stuff was easier... I take that back! :rolleyes:
