I bought a Kubota B 1750 2wd at an auction recently, at a local John Deere dealer. I asked them to service it while it was there. They called and said the oil dip stick was broken off and down in the engine. They want $1500 to break it down and see what damage was done. It seems to run good but I hate to put that much more into it. It has 950 hrs or so on the 3 cyl. diesel 20 hp engine. Is it hard to split one of these? What would cause the dip stick to break?

Thanks,

I won't bother, the chances of it doing anything except laying in the bottom of the pan are very remote.

But, if you really want to it's a walk in the park, pull the front axle and the propeller shaft, pull the pan bolts and tada...bet your find a broken dipstick laying in the bottom, and if your unlucky it will have a couple dings in it from when it first broke off.

And the best I can tell, the tip of the dipstick just vibrates and breaks off, usually at a score or stamp mark.

Typical JD dealer with a foreign brand....lol Pulling the pan is easy. I'm in Wolfman's corner, just buy a new dipstick and tell the dipstick at the Deere dealer no thanks.

Back when I owned a big truck, I broke a couple dipsticks off and when it was time for a main bearing roll in, they were sleeping in the bottom of the oil pan along with a thrust bearing.
