I just read this thread and noticed up there in thread #14 you mentioned you had a Lincoln 110. I was going to tell you that's enough welder to do what you're wanting to do. Get you a good hood, a small grinder to get the metal clean and get to work.

Get a scrap piece of steel to play with a while, just to get the setting right and feel comfortable. If you have the equipment and don't use it, just as well have a yard sale!:D:D

I've had that little Lincoln for decades for Jeep stuff - it works fine up to 3/16" plate on a hard pass with prep. The past 6-8 years it lived at my buddy's garage and he did all the welding for me so I got out of practice!

You really don't need angle iron for that top link, there is no side (twisting) load, it's only a pulling load, so flat bar would be fine.
