No such adapter so took the PTO shaft into a specialist drive shaft shop. He pointed out that it had been extended (badly) previously, so it was easy for him to shorten it down to the right length. I've been using it for several weeks and goes great. Fitted a suspension seat today, what a treat.

Unloaded the trailer this morning and lift arms work fine. I'll put it down to overloading. I'm going to modify a dolly trailer to sit in between which will take the weight. Otherwise I'll just use a bigger tractor. Thank you to everyone for their suggestions.
