Has anyone successfully replaced the ball in the lift arm or do I need to cut and weld on a new end?

Did the ball fall out because of wear in the socket on the arm, or did the ball just break? If it fell out, you could place the ball back in the socket and then build up the socket edges with a Mig welder, or with an oxy/acetylene set. Did that to a JD 710 years ago, and it is still in place and working.

At less that 5 bucks each (plus some shipping!) I think I would bevel me a new one and weld it up!!! Gonna have to get a welder out anyway - might as well start with a new arm!

My Nuffield 465 had open ends on the arms and you could put cat 1 or cat 2 balls into the open socket. There was a riveted on spring plate that was supposed to keep the ball in place when no implement was attached but I was forever looking for my ball(s). The one thing I regretted was to not use the opportunity to make the lower arms a little longer. I had the welder match the arm length with the welded on end. Another 1 to 2" on the arms would have made the u joints on my snowblower's pto shaft much happier by moving the blower a bit further from the pto shaft on the tractor. The 3 pt would not have been affected as the tractor had lots of weight.
