How do I determine if my PTO output shaft is bad on my M9540? M9540 turning a 6’ brush hog.....feels like the tractor is going shake the windows out.....Same mower on a M6800....no vibration, mows as it should!! Need help, already changed blades, stump jumper and driveline on the mower only to find out it’s not the mower!!!

A few questions.

When you say driveline do you mean the pto shaft?

Is the same pto shaft being used on both tractors?

Have you successfully run other pto driven implements on the M9540?

The M9540 has an optional 540/1,000 rpm pto. Could yours have this option?

Is it bent? Does the shaft have to be pulled out longer on the bigger tractor? Less overlap between the inner and outer shafts, more deflection and imbalance. With the tractor off, lift on the driveshaft in the middle. How much 'play' is in it? Is there any play at the tractor?

Typically my M9540 is dedicated to a 15’ batwing mower, I have been noticing some vibrations with my batwing lately but I knew my right wing driveline u-joints were getting bad. I changed over to the 6’ mower while I was waiting for new my wing driveline to arrive. When I hooked up the 6’ mower it began vibrating and shaking me to death!! Thinking it was the 6’ mower, I replaced the mower driveline, blades and stump jumper(it was time), when I hooked it back up to the M9540 there was less vibrations but still enough to shake pretty good. Just to test the mower completely, I hooked it up to my M6800 and it ran smooth and operated normally. I bought the M9540 new in 2007 and have operated both the 15’ and 6’ mower with it and never felt the tractor shake and vibrate like this!!

Did you check the bushing/bearing in your tractor PTO shaft?

I haven’t checked the bearing or bushing. I’m sure I can figure it out but does anyone have any tips? I’m guessing I start by draining the fluid and removing the back plate around the PTO shaft?

No, I was just referring to "how much play" is in it. Can you wiggle it up and down by hand? My first guess at your problem was that the bigger tractor has the drive shaft pulled out longer.

Candidly no. 425 hours in 15 years, it's still new. I'm curious if it vibrates with nothing attached to the PTO as in nothing on the back, PTO engaged and engine throttled up. Take the implement off, start the tractor and engage the pto (at idle where you should be engaging it anyway) and throttle it up and report back. Could be some broken gear teeth in the pto drive case. If it is, that is an easy fix as the entire pto section comes out the back. I think it's 12 bolts. I've had mine apart before but before we get into that, try it with no implement on the back.

If it still shakes I'll get into taking it apart and yes, all the internal components, gears and bearings are available at your dealer. Not difficult to rebuild either.

That will get you nothing. Forget that.

Interesting two threads going on with seems same issue and seems to be basically same model line.

The early M9 PTO gear cases are really plug and play simple. The rear casting (held on with hex capscrews has the entire pto geartrain bosses cast into it, one piece and the gears, bearings and shims (for preload) are all easily replaceable.
