I finally got my tilt cylinder fabbed up for my B2650. I bought it new from Surplus Center when I got my top cylinder and been laying around for a year. Pretty busy here!! I bought the cylinder the correct diameter and length, knowing I would have to cut the ends off and fab some new ones to fit my tractor. I actually got another factory side link, as I didnt want to ruin mine in case I need to put it back on, from the dealer I work for. Customer had bent it and was in the trash. All I needed is the ends any way. I thought it would be real easy to just weld the 2 ends on, but the cylinder was too long for that, to get the same amount of travel both ways. So I had to cut it all apart and make it work so the cylinder was in the center of its travel with the 3 point arms level. I just cut the original tabs from the hydraulic cylinder tube off. The piston was threaded, so I was able to spin that piece off. I didnt want to weld to the piston of course, so I went to Fastenal and got 2 nuts that would thread on to the piston. One to weld 1/4" plate and the tabs too. The other one would act as a lock nut. I ran out of threads on the piston, so I had to cut the lock nut in half to be able to work. No problem with that, still plenty of meat left on it.

I had the original side link set at level for the 3pt arms, and put the hydraulic cylinder at mid stroke, and mounted them in the vise on top of each other to get the correct length and correct angle for the tabs I had to cut and weld up. Welded everything up, wire brushed it up for the new Kubota gray paint to match everything up.

Here are the pics of the final install. Finally figured it out. I guess the file size was too big.

Like your little welding table. Might do that myself.

The little welding table is perfect what I do. Welded it to an old car rim. I welded a 2" wheel on the front just off of the floor, so I can just tip it forward and drive it around my shop to put it wherever I need.

I thought I would post the numbers for the cylinder from surplus center for the cylinder if someone was interested.

Well done Sir!
Thanks Yooper! Been a while. Seems like this past year just been running equipment and not to much fab work to post. Hope all is well with you. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Yooper, I'm in the process of adding top and tilt to my B1700 and just discovered this old thread. I would rather fabricate my tilt cylinder like you did--there is no kit available for my 25 year old tractor and Fit Rite now has a 30 week lead time--and I have the equipment and skills to do it. I will do the tilt as soon as I get the top working--I bought a two spool control valve and will plug the second spool until I get this set up. My B1700 tilt link looks just like yours and although it does not carry the same part number, it is probably very close. I have done the measurements on an old frozen link that I replaced last year and it appears that the cylinder you used will fit nicely as yours did, and it is still available. Hopefully you will see this entry and answer a question.

I suppose you took the cylinder apart to weld the top connector on. What tool did you use to get it apart? It appears that the cap/seal end has end pin holes and would use a spanner like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-S...58&sprefix=hydraulic+cylinder+,aps,153&sr=8-5 .

Thanks you for an informative thread. Dave D

I can't speak for Yooper, but when I did my top and tilt cylinders, there was no need to dissasemble them. My tilt cylinders (I have two) are short, with 4 inch stroke. Longer stroke, even better to keep the heat away from the rod end cylinder seals.

No seals at the back end, and I fully extended the rod end, and kept wet rags on the rod, and took my time welding the ends on, with cooling time allocated between welds.

I TIG welded but not sure that would make much of a difference, if at all.

No issues after 19 years...

I will be TIG welding as well and with TIG vs. stick I can more quickly heat and weld a small area without over-heating the whole piece. But my primary concern is burnt oil inside the cylinder. Even though it would be mostly empty, enough oil would be at the weld area to burn and potentially contaminate the large (and expensive) amount of Kubota UDT2 I just put in a couple months ago. Did you flush your cylinder after welding and if so what did you find?
