Gear box has to come off as a unit. There is a snap ring (080) that has to come off to pull box.
To replace shaft, box has to come apart. But it is pretty simple.

Ahh your cold man really cold
If you have ever had an extractor break off in the center of a stuck bolt, you'll understand why so many people hate bolt extractors. If you have enough of the bolt sticking out, use a vice grip to grab it and turn it out. If you want to get really exotic, buy a bolt-extraction induction heater. It costs about $125, and after you use it once, you will say, "I wish I had known about this tool years ago." I can't begin to tell you how many times mine has made my life much simpler, without having to struggle with a frozen bolt you know will snap off as soon as you put a tool on its head.

Heat is the key. (you don't need much)
welding a nut to a broken bolt is the best way..
but in this case where you are concerned about damaging a seal.... left hand drill is best.

not only are you drilling in the correct direction, the generated heat helps release it.

Yep you are right about the nut, but I dont weld so my options are limited. The bolt broke off flush with then of the spindle. So it should be all fun and games :)

Sometimes it is less frustrating and agonizing to give the part to a machine shop to remove the broken bolt. I had some broken exhaust manifold studs, and knowing how difficult they are to remove, I handed the heads to a machine shop to remove them. Before they started, they magnafluxed the heads and found a crack in one. This alone saved me a lot of aggravation if I had just had them remove the broken studs and then put the engine back together. Bring the part over to the machine shop and get a price. Asking is free, and it might surprise you how inexpensive it might be.
