My question is specific for the B2601 but I guess an answer would be valid for all other tractors.

I'd like to know if the PTO is protected internally from something that would jam it. For example, if I have an implement that uses a chain but doesn't have a shear pin, would that be dangerous for the tractor? I'm thinking that if the pto is hydraulic, then there's probably a relief valve that would protect the mechanism from too high pressure.

And in the case of an attachment that uses belts, would the belt slipping be enough to prevent damage to the implement and the tractor?

no, in most cases. A hydraulic clutch is just hydraulically operated. It still uses clutch discs that will burn if slipped enough. There is no safety built in to the pto clutch.
A shear pin or slip clutch is the way to go.

Understood. So i could buy a slip clutch or a new yoke with a shear pin. But to try and save a bit of money, I've been looking for some kind of shear couple. My pto shaft drives a 1" steel round bar on which on pulley is attached to the other end. Is there some kind of couple that would allow me to cut the bar in two and then slip the couple over and secure with a shear pin? I guess any ind of 1" tube that I can drill into would work but I was hoping that something exists already

1) remove screw from pulley that tightens it to the 1" shaft( I'll assume it's a 1/4" set screw)
2) drill a 1/4" hole through the 1" shaft, exactly dead center, where pulley has to be.
3) slip pulley onto shaft.
4) use a 1/4" Grade5 bolt and locknut to secure pulley onto shaft.
5) keep at least 2-3 premade sets of bolt/nuts with implement...

The Grade5 bolt is used as a 'shearpin'. Now you can buy proper shearpins ( think walk behind 'snowblower')

This 'system' is used for my 5' Montana rototiller as well as my Berco snowblowers. While some will say a grade5 is too tough, when a rock gets jammed in Montans, the bolt breaks NOT the tiller. 10 years, maybe 15 bolts..as I keep finding rocks every season.....

Agri supply sells these. There is one for 1-3/8 spline or smooth. It goes on the tractors pto shaft before the implement. Should fix your problem for relatively cheap.
