PTO Problems

I purchased a M4500DT. The PTO clutch control lever won't disengage the PTO gears to allow me to move the Ground PTO gear shift lever. When I try to move the Ground PTO gear shift lever, I just get grinding gears. If I shut the tractor down, I can then shift the PTO into gear, but I can not disengage the PTO using the PTO clutch control lever, so I have to shut the tractor down to shift the PTO out of gear. Am I doing something wrong or is there a clutch problem? Thanks to anyone who responds. Dennis

You may be able to adjust the linkage of the pedal to clutch.

It sounds like you have a clutch problem since you are able to shift it when not running.

That has a very unique clutch setup, it's a twin clutch with twin controls.
Foot operated clutch for movement and hand operated clutch for PTO.
So are you disengaging the hand clutch to put it into gear?
If you are and it's grinding, it's either stuck, maladjusted, or damaged.
Most commonly it's stuck.
Use a PTO implement and run it with the PTO disengaged and see if you can get it break loose.
Then if that doesn't work get the WSM for the procedure to adjust the clutch linkage, or clutch pack.
And if that doesn't work you'll need to split it to fix the clutch.
