14’ of C2x1x3/16 channel and 10’ of 2x2x1/4 angle. 65lbs. Total came to $90. Measure 3 times and cut once for sure! Most I ever paid for steel in my lifetime

That's assuming you can get it right away. Gotta factor in some generous lead times.
I work at a place that does fabrication (mostly aluminum) and welding. It's ridiculous.
Priced out a 2' x 2' x 1"thk aluminum plate at mcmaster (needed it asap) and it was almost $600. We decided we didn't need it tomorrow. We'll get it in a week for a bit over half that price.

last year I contacted Morton Buildings to get my barn doors repaired. He was telling me steel prices went up 600% and availability was low. It cost me $1600 to repair two doors, and that was just some wood replacement and 3 pieces of 11' trim. Most of it was material costs, and it took 5 months to get done.

If steel prices are up so high, shouldn't scrap prices be as well? I have a few hundred pounds of scrap to get rid of too.

Steel, and hardware. Depending on what I order, it's up from about 40%, to over 200%. I bought some 7/8" DOM tube a couple of years ago, and it was $1.25 an inch (shipped). I'm scared to reorder...

guys you gotta learn to barter with the right people ! they call it 'networking ' these days I suppose.
I remove driveway snow for a guy that owns a metalfab shop.... I've never paid for any steel in 20 years.
not bragging, just saying , it might be an option ?
Nuther guy a do his driveway, haven't bought eggs in years. these are 'farm fresh, free roaming ' eggs.

That might work for scraps, but I'm running a business.

not steel but 2x6x8 spruce 16.59 each. I was going to build a steel building then a standard garage because the delta was small between the steel building and a conventional garage. now I am going to build a small pole building for the tractor and have the lumber sawn locally for the sheathing.

Steel prices were just starting to come down a bit before the gas-jacking took place. Hopefully it doesn't hurt it further.
The thing that gets me is the three places I deal with are all large suppliers and between help shortages and whatever they don't even want to sell anything but full lengths and that is with a prepaid 24hr in advance order! The fourth place, a bit smaller actually cuts my pieces to length and doesn't even charge me for the convenience. I order almost weekly from them.

yup 'they' got the supply, so 'they' demand a king's ransome for it....
along with $10 2by4s, $100 sheet of garbage plywood, $1000 cellphones....

now IF we could STOP buying stuff for awhile, 'they' would have to reduce their prices as the cost of holding inventory is a HUGE expense.

My wife works for a manufacturer of containers, steel and plastic for a lot of items I bet many on this forum have bought over the years, especially if they like a certain brand of soup and lip balm.

Since the plandemic, they have to show allocations for anything they buy, such as how much steel, tin, brass etc., and can only purchase a set amount for the year. The food grade material used to line cans comes from overseas, and the price has sky rocketed, for a while they were unable to ship any due to all the lockdowns. If they get a new job, they have to go through hoops to get more material for it. Think it's bad for us little guys getting material, imagine having to get it in tons and can't.

They also will not allow any scrap metals to be taken or sold. It all goes back to a scrapped to be recycled. I asked if she could get some scraps for me, and was unable to.

Sooooo if we just stop buying stuff for 2 weeks we can get ahead of the curve ?
