Ran across a L185DT,
owner has changed fluids, tried to start, thinks about 4" of the ring gear is stripped.
Turns over, starts to smoke, like it wants to start, but then hits the bad spot and looses momentum.

Hood is really rough, rear fenders and instrument panel show some hope.
Other that, it is basically all there, just need some help and TLC.
I think the hood has been changed, it is not stating 'DT' which it clearly is.

Thoughts on what you would offer based on his claims and the condition?

Air up the tires and pull start (or try) then you might know if the engine is going to be a lost cause. If the engine won't start it's a parts tractor. If no one you know needs parts, it's worth zero! If you REALLY want a project and willing to spend what it takes to get it going, maybe $400-500 tops, but I personally wouldn't be interested with all the work and parts required.... then you just have an old tractor you can feel good about.

I agree with D2Cat ......

IF your willing to place money IN IT - and then use it or sell it later....... $500 would be max.

I would really start at the ol "here is a $100 and I'll take it off your hands"

Hell - the owner really ought to pay YOU to haul it off !
