Hello, new guy here.

I'm looking for a new tractor, trying to decide between the 2501 or the 4701. I'd like the bigger tractor because I'd rather have it oversized vs undersized, but it's a 10k difference as well.

I'm used to using a Massey Ferguson 135 and a Ford 3000 to plow/disc/plant/till/bushog up to 3 acres. Cleaning up spots for deer hunting, etc..

Do you think this is a task that the L2501 HST 4wd could handle? Or do I need to step it up?

Both of your previous tractors have almost double the PTO HP as the L2501. With the L2501 at 19-20 HP I would probably step it up. Depends on how fast you want to perform the same tasks you were doing before unless your keeping the older tractors. If this will be your only tractor I would look to be able to grow into something instead of grow out. I initially looked at the L4701 and then stepped up to the MX5800. I am looking at doing all the things you stated and then some. But noticing you said you only have 3 acres may depend on if you will be adding more property in the future. What size implements do you currently have? If they are too big for the L2501 are you going to invest in smaller ones? Just my opinion. Good luck in your decision!

I'm going with all "new" implements, not using the old tractors or implements. Don't think I'll add anymore land to work here. I've got around 15 acres total, but only work up to ~3 of the acres as far as planting/hunting; the rest is wooded.

I used the bigger cousin L3400 for a few years on my 13 acres and knew it was not big enough for my tasks. It did not like to pull my land plane working the 2000' of drive. So I decided a L3800 would work just fine. After a year looking a used one iin good shape was not successful.

A used L4600 with 178 hours came up for sale just 10 minutes from the house.

Looked it over and made an offer of 17,500 cash, he was asking 21,500 and he took it.

Looking back I'm glad I went bigger it does all I won't.

Have a 3/4 acre I tend with it and it does great. It will pull my subsoiler with no problem, my 6' land plane full of gravel, and totes the disk or tiller with ease.

I wanted used and had saved for it so we could pay cash, the 0% looks attractive but I did want any regen on mine.

Good luck and making the right choice the first time is less expensive than finding out a year later what you have is not big enough.

I think it might be worth your while to go bigger if you getting rid of the old tractors. I have a 2501 but I also have use of a older bigger tractor for brush hogging and tilling my food plots, which will total about 3 acres this fall.

this is a tough one there is a big diffrence between these two.. your at the bottom and top of the L series, except for the grand series. A lot of people love both these tractors. Based on your input either will do the job. But the L4701 will give you a lot of power to work. the L2501 would be a smaller if your going into some tight wooded areas.

I know many posters here love some HST models and if I did a lot of loader or grapple work I would have one. For my needs I love my gear model.

So depending on you more specific needs could you consider the 4701 in a gear model that should bring it a little closer to the 2501 HST?

Just a thought.

Good luck.

When I started my search I initially was focused on the L4701. It looked like a great model, but the cost to move to the MX4800 was around $700. Which was a cheap upgrade for the weight and loader.

However, I ended up with the MX5200...it is a slippery slope.

I initially wanted a L4701 or MX4800. I ended up going with a L3901. We have an old AC 5040 that we would till and bushhog with. I wanted something a little smaller to get down some of my trails and be able to get to the bottom below my house to put in food plots. I'm very happy with the L3901, enough power, yet small enough to get into some tight spaces.
