1987 L2250 4wd, FEL, manual trans. Was clearing a property today - bush hogging, pushing out debris, etc.

Tractor stopped driving. Put in gear - sure enough, checked hi/low linkage - yep - engaged properly, put in forward or reverse on lever to left of steering wheel - ease out clutch and tractor makes a faint zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound. Both forward or reverse.

All hydraulics work, PTO works - everything except will not drive forward or reverse. Makes that faint zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound.

Any ideas what happened?

I'd check the adjustment on the high/low linkage. It sounds like it may not be actually engaged but in kind of a neutral position between the two.

Your Hi/Lo lever must have gotten jostled into the "neutral" position. It's happened to me before.

That model tractor could have either a single stage or dual stage clutch.

If equipped with a dual stage clutch:
Before it stopped working, were you able to stop the motion of the tractor and keep the PTO spinning with only stepping about 1/2 way down on the pedal?

If so then you're probably looking at a clutch issue.
But that's still not 100%, could be many other issues too.

If equipped with a single stage clutch:
Any clutch pedal movement would stop both the tractor movement and the PTO movement?

If so,
It's not a clutch issue as the PTO would also not be spinning if the clutch went out, so it's something else down the line.

One other check is put it in 4ed and see if it moves, if it does then you have a rear end issue.
