Hello,

Looking for some help in trying to diagnose why my tractor all of a sudden won't start? It's ran fine, has 229 hours on it, and all of a sudden today it wouldn't start. It started and ran fine two days ago. Battery is good, cranks over, just won't fire and start. Checked fuses, checked fuel filter (looks good on fuel & level) and tried to check fuel pump.

When turning the key, this turns left to pre-heat the plugs. You have to push the clutch pedal in (yes, this has a clutch pedal even though it's HST) to start. The weather today was in the 70's. The only thing I noticed was when you turn the key to the right to start it, when it's in the mid position the "clicking" noise that can be heard goes on/off, almost like there isn't good contact. Even though you hold the key in position, the clicking is going in/out (on/off) on its own without moving the key.

Is it possible this doesn't have an electronic fuel pump? This is an HST model and I have not experienced this issue before. Looking for any help or suggestions, please be specific. Pictures and cited web links would be greatly appreciated to help.

Thanks & God Bless!

I bet your fuel shut off is not opening. My 5100 would do something close, it would start but the second I came out of start position it would shut down. I changed the key switch and it fixed my problem.

Hello,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm going to take the cowling off around the dash to get a peek behind there to see what I find. I appreciate the information!

Well, for all you MX owners out there, I was able to figure out the fix for the problem I experienced. It wound up being the solenoid that was faulty. The solenoid is electronically operated, and for those that don't know, has a push rod assembly on it. When you turn the key, it's supposed to send a signal to the solenoid causing it to open (pull inward toward the solenoid assembly) this small push rod. Mine was faulty and didn't do this, thereby, not feeding any fuel into the motor to get it to fire.

On a side note, my local Kubota dealer (Lingle Sales) was fantastic at helping me out. I went in to buy parts and one of their mechanics spoke to me to help diagnose the issue. He gave me a problem solving tip, which was to remove the current solenoid (unbolt it - 10mm nuts), turn the ignition, then see if the motor fired (which it did). This bypasses the solenoid to try to rule out if this is the issue. The one thing that wasn't mentioned is if this works, the motor starts but won't shut off  This solenoid controls fuel flow to the motor by moving this push rod to control fuel flow. The customer service from Lingle was great, considering I didn't buy my tractor from them, and they helped give me information that they didn't have to in order to fix it myself.

As a refresh, my tractor would crank and crank but wouldn't fire/start. Everything else checked out ok, fuel line, fuel, fuses. It ran fine a few days before then all of a sudden just wouldn't start. I hope this will help others that may experience a similar issue in fixing it on their own.

Take Care & God Bless!!
