Just curious - notifications about likes, dislikes, etc. don't match what shows on the post

When I get notifications that someone liked, disliked, laughed or whatever one of my posts, it's common to get 2 or 3 such notifications, but when I go to the post, it almost always shows just one. Once in a while the count shown on the post matches, but usually not.

Why is that?

Are you saying your getting more than one notification that I liked your post?

No, different users. I'll get a notification that Sam liked my post, then Harry, then Sally.

But when I go to the post, it shows one Like.

Not that I'm collecting likes, I"m just curious, and the engineer in me is bugged by software that doesn't work right.

IIRC, the number of likes shown on the post is always less than the number of notifications. I don't recall it ever being the other way.

Also…someone might “like” your post…then later retract their “like”… You will get the notice they liked it …but not that they removed their like.

I kind of wondered about that but if that’s the cause, we have quite a few here with serious commitment issues.

Typical scenario: I post something, leave the site to do real life stuff, come back several hours later. My notifications show 4 specific users liked my post. One quoted my post so I follow the link in my notifications to check the quote and see if further response is appropriate. When I get back to the thread I see I have 2 likes, not 4.

That mismatch happens almost every time if not every time, and it doesn’t require multiples. Not unusual to have one like notice and no likes showing on the post.

That and clicking the likes line as instructed above by Wolfman doesn’t actually do anything using iPhone, so I’ve never compared the notifications to credited likes on the post to see who may have retracted their like as I’m always on an iPhone when on this site.

It’s one of those things that isn’t exactly a problem; it’s just weird.

Even though there actually have been several "like" posts, the OP poster will only show as having received one "like".
Not always,.....but most times!

I bet your getting likes on earlier posts in a thread link, and that's why you don't see them on the last post you made.

Ok I see what's happening to you.
It's possibly a cache issue, when on the post refresh the page and see if that "fixes" it.

Right now the counter is showing that I have 1,286 likes. I never look to see who likes what I post or who doesn't like what I post. You can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time. Just strive for perfection as best as you can, and hopefully, you will be correct more often than you are not. Now, may I have a few likes on this post?

Was just reading another post, and looked up at the "like" counter, and it is now showing 1284, which tells me that since making this post 2 people gave me a dislike on one of my many posts. The system is working just as it was intended.
