A few years back I turned Orange...(went from a Long 445 to a L2900GST). I love the L2900 and found the GST a major improvement over a gear shifted Long. But...I made a huge mistake in judgement when buying the L2900. I did a lot of research before I ran across her and it was love at first sight. This love blinded me...as she was not fitted with a FEL. I thought I would manage to find a used FEL or an aftermarket at a reasonable price, but that never happened.

Fast forward a few years and the love affair with the L2900 has faded. I finally cannot live without a FEL and it is time to let her go. I drove by my local Orange dealer last weekend and there she was. A barely used L3901 (64 hours young), she was outfitted with a QA bucket and a third function valve up front and a canopy up top...wearing a like new set of R4's; and an asking price of 19,500.

I spent the past week reading and drooling through this forum. Reading how capable the Standard L's were and learning there limitations. I read about the rebates and the finance options of going new. Compared the pros and cons of buying new vs used. I was armed with newly acquired knowledge. Applied online and yesterday I loaded the L2900 on my trailer and thought I would return home with a new/used standard L.

I test drove the used unit. I test drove the new units both L3301 and the L3901 similarly equip. I sat down with my super knowledgeable, helpful and PATIENT sales rep. We discussed for hours the finance options and warranties (bumper to bumper, power train and Kubota's infamous cover you a$$ mandatory insurance) available for both the used and new L's. We discussed $1000 rebate on the attachments...rendering my need for pallet forks effortless. It became quit apparent and affordable that going new with 84 month 0% was the way forward.

Indecisive...? Yes, because right as I was choosing between the L3301 and the L3901 I glanced out the window to see a B2650. She was wearing R4's and was well dressed with a cab...with heat, A/C! I thought surely she was out of my league, but I could not fight the affection...and I inquired. Yes, she was in my league she only require and few hundred to bump my trade (L2900) into 20% territory to be eligible for 84mo 0% financing (I love Kubota).

So by now the noon hour had long passed (dealership closed at noon) and me, the wife and the PATIENT salesman are waiting for me to select which serial numbers were going to get plugged into the computer.

I pulled a new L3901 next to the B2650 and started contemplating my purchase. The B2650 looked so small next to the L3901. So much so that I questioned the B2650's manhood. Looking at the specs...the loader capacity of the L3301/3901 isn't much more than the B2650. But looking at the 3PH and rear axles between the two and comparing PTO HP and my current implements (biggest being a Woods RM90 which surprising the L2900 capably handled)... the decision became too much and I needed more time and research.

Indecisive?...yes because the most important feature and the reason that I'm even in this position is the FEL. I'm looking to be able to do grading and lifting (palletized engines and transmissions from muscle cars mainly) with the FEL. Last night I researched...and bigger is better is prominently intrenched into my head. Now I'm thinking L3560 or MX4800...

So...do I give up the the PTO HP (not that attached to the RM90) and go with luxurious A/C and heat...etc for a B2650?

Do I sacrifice the luxury and go with a bigger machine with little advantage when it come to FEL capacity and go with a L3301?

Do I splurge a little beyond my intended budget for real muscle machine in the realm of the MX/Grand L?

I know that a cabbed Grand L would be the perfect fit but beyond my intended purpose of upgrading my lovely L2900 to new FEL unit.

I have 5.5 acres, 3.5 clear and 2 wooded. I have an vintage car refurb business where the FEL is needed to load palletized engines. I currently load pallets using a gantry and hoist but it is not mobile. I have a 1/4 mile driveway to clear snow and maintain walking/atv trails. My budget is around $300-$350/mo. Using my L2900 ($4000) as a down payment and willing to go $1000-$2000 additional to get to 20% down.

Thanks for any insight.
Allan

You ask a lot of questions, but the answers are all your decisions.

I would think your L2900 is worth more then $4000. It's 17 years old without a loader, so what? It's summer coming up and someone is looking for your tractor! Put an ad on CL for 6K...you might be surprised.

Be patient! Don't take your wife to look at tractors until you have decided what you want her to look at.

You don't want to go the Rensin House of Lights only to get there and they have 1000 lights hanging from the ceiling and you're overwhelmed at what will look good in your home! :D

How heavy are the engines on pallets? Good to have extra HP and lifting ability. I would get the MX since I don't really care for cabs.

The heaviest v8 would be around 700lbs. Occasionally a 5.9 cummins at around 1100.

The LA525 should be able to handle that but it's at the limit if you have to lift the pallet high. Would be no sweat for a MX.

The 525 loader will struggle with 1100 pounds on the forks. The 525 means it will lift 525 kilograms multiply by 2.2. Equals is 1155 pounds at the pins. I would go bigger now so as to not be unhappy after you get it home. My needs recently changed and my B2650 is now a little too small. I went to local dealer, same dealer I purchased my last 3 pieces of equipment and he steered me towards the L4701 with FEL. Great, let's do it I said, until he called and said he wanted my 2015 B2650 with 240 hours on it with FEL and 60 inch MMM. Plus $19,000.00. I had to say no deal. :( My tractor isn't worth much with the current incentives. So. Short story long. Make sure it's the right one for your needs. With good deals on new ones, the like new used ones do not get much for trade. Just my thoughts. Good luck with your purchase.

Dexter, can I ask you how much they offered you on the trade for your B2650?

Mike. O We never got to puting any details on paper as i didn't want to finance the 19k. . He just told me 19,000 plus my tractor. My view was the L4701 Msrp is 33,136 according to build my kubota. Drop $3000 off for the good guy discount - 19,000 cash leaves my trade at 11,236  for a machine I've used for a year and a half. I still like the tractor and can get by with it, I can also understand the dealer would have trouble selling the used over new with current incentives. Just hoped to get into bigger now that needs have changed. maybe next year.

I was offered 9000 for trade on my 2004 B7610. Sold it for more. Ive seen used B2650s going for 16,500 with ~250 hours at dealers.

I think my dealer was asking over 25k for a B2650 with FEL, Bucket, Forks, R4's and cab.

A new B2650 cab with loader. Forks and R4's I would expect to be at least 25k to 30k. If you need to lift 1100 ponds on a pallet off or onto a truck. It's not going to do it. I cannot unload a 1000 pound pallet of feed without struggling. If a cab is important go for it. If not I would check out the 4701. Little bigger, more lifting, but no cab.

I'm going to throw a monkey in the wrench here....
Since the loader is important for the pallets why not hunt craigslist for a forklift? Honestly I think you'd be better suited (I'd rather move pallets with a fork lift any day and use to do just that years ago)
And the money saver would be to get a rear blade to work with the box blade for your current machine to do the grading and keep on looking for the loader.

Thanks Dexter, and everyone else on their input. I just ordered my B2650 ad it's coming some time within the next week. As everyone seems to do, I am questioning myself if I went big enough. I'm sure I will be happy with it, but its always nice to know the value of your machine.

I got my B2650 from Barlow Equipment out of Kentucky, they are shipping it up to CT. I got a B2650 with FEL, BH 77, R4 tires, no cab, for $23500 delivered. It was by far the best price I could find and beat local dealers by $3000 - $4000. The wait time is 2-4 weeks, but for 3-4k, I'll anxiously wait!

allanwms, when you get your L4701 quote, would you mind sharing? Love hearing pricing on machines.

Have a 1984 L2250DT w/ a BF400G. Lifting capacity is 1683#. Bolted 2 cast steel lifting eyes @ corners of bucket w/chains & snap hooks (all components 5000# rated). chain are slightly longer than to pass bucket edge by 10", makes fine height adjustments w/ curl very easy, not jumpy. over 10K hours on machine. This setup lifts 2000 logs onto trailers. low speed operation = no strain. bucket ratings take travel stresses into account. You'll have no trouble w/ lifting.

I agree with all that bigger is better! Also, a possible consideration is a self leveling bucket (forks too) if it's going to see service as a forklift. An 1100 pound Cummins strapped or bolted to a pallet isn't pretty with a 15 degrees of accidental bucket roll. I believe one of the Grand L loaders can provide this. Maybe the M's too.
