Well I have been playing with it and have to admit there is a bit of a learning curve. One thing I did and I wonder if anyone else has done it. I went into the compost pile grabbed a mouth full and promptly lost most of it before I got to the garden. So I figure Im not the first, what has anyone else done to the grapple to pick up stuff like that and not lose it

I have heard of folks adding chicken wire or expanded metal to pick up things like leaves and compost with their grapples.

You did not say how you grabbed it (position of the grapple). I have had some real success picking up piles of leaves and grass (old piles - similar to compost?) by grabbing them from directly overhead. Open grapple pushed/lowered straight down, and then closing the grapple on the pile. The pressure seems to hold it all together.

Of course, many people add mesh to their grapples to handle loose materials as noted above.

If you're up to the challenge, try picking up some sand or crushed rock!

I have picked up moist clay fairly well with my grapple. I can see most other things being a challenge.

I would love to have another grapple with expanded metal mounted on it, but that's just wishful thinking.
