The high country is so dry that this big boy decided to come in for a drink several times over the last week or so. He also brought his little brother a couple times, but we only had the camera handy for this shot. Range, 18 feet, through the screen on the window over the kitchen sink. He drank approx. 4-5 gals each time.

Yup, he's a beast, alright!
Amazingly, I've seen some bigger & several hundred pounds heavier in the area. Because of the drought conditions, the critters are getting more desperate & bold for food & water. After he drank his fill, he moved about 250ft to our second acre where a neighbor has placed a "bird block" (seeds glued into a 10lb block with a maple-honey stuff) where he proceeded to chow down. The wife & I sat quietly about 200ft away & watched him for 50 minutes before he moved off. He demolished the block.

Fish & game put out a flyer warning us about a nuisance bear & a mountain lion within a half mile radius, but we haven't seen them.

It's amazing some times where you will find deer and what they will do. I was showing my dad the little town closest to the house and we saw the biggest buck we've ever seen running down the side walk through the middle of town.

More visitors last week.

Are those feral hogs or javelina?

I’d rather have the elk around than the pigs, but javelina aren’t as destructive as the feral pigs??

Snow is a good javelina repellent, but there have been some feral ones years ago.

Javelina. Not nearly as destructive as feral hogs- most people never know they're around. There is a group of 7-9 that hang around the area, not quite tame, but not very skittish either. I was on my porch, 3ft higher and maybe 12-20ft away, and had my small dog in my arms, and even talking didn't seem to bother them.
Besides the scat, the only evidence they leave are some pretty large, deep digs around old stumps, looking for grubs.

He's in velvet, you don't shoot an animal in velvet. Looks dry there. I'd be happy to send you some rain. It's rained here almost every day for the last month. Every field is under water and the last day for 65 day corn was yesterday. Probably 75-80% of the fields here are fallow and weedy with ponds in them.

I have almost 100 acres of hay to cut but cannot cut it. Too wet.

Way back in the day, when we had meetings at the sportsmans club, they sometimes would show movies,, yeah 16mm sound, old time right? Anyway, one movie was either Fred Bear, hunting in the US south west. He was hunting peccary, and it took 2 shots to down one. And Fred Bear was no slouch with a bow. Since then they are something I have always wanted to hunt with a bow. WHY?? I havent a clue maybe because one of my heros did, and we all want to be like our heros

Several decades ago I tuned in to a hunting show in progress. It showed Ben Pearson & Fred Bear walking through a field carrying bows, talking casually. All at once a pheasant flushed, and one of them shot it with an arrow. They got several over the course of the show, never missing a shot. Simply amazing. I had trouble dropping pheasant with a 12 gauge.

Most Hunting Shows now-a-days are staged and full of commercials.
Steven Rinella's 'MeatEater' have some very good episodes, worth the watch.

I set up a trail cam a week or so ago out my driveway just to see what's around. Like you Muzzy I love to hunt and fish. Archery is very addictive, after joining the archery club years back I would spend 4 to 5 afternoons at the club, even got my wife into it for a while. Here's a few critters I caught on camera but I will warn you I forgot to set the time and date before I put it up. Lil Foot your buddy is welcome to come over to my place for a drink anytime.;)

Had a couple more visitors at the cabin this past week.
Two spikes 4 ft from the front porch where I was reading.
