Going into the summer I have a full tank of #1 and also have a 5 gallon container of #1. Rookie question: Should I save the #1 container until colder weather and use #2 this summer or would the #1 get stale over the summer. Not worth taking a chance for a couple of bucks but was just curious.

I always go with fresh and am constantly adding new fuel to the stored fuel I have in my containers. I have mixed summer/winter for years without issue. In addition, I run additives in all my fuel for storage and performance.

I would just use what you have available then purchase some new fuel in the winter and add an anti-gel agent to it. I'm still using leftover winter fuel in mine.

Use what you have. Buy more as you need. Fuel bought in Fall will be winterized as required to sell. Don't need to store/save any fuel, just use it and replace it.

I was a restaurant cook for years.

Food is like diesel (or gasoline); fresh is always best! (y)

A lot of it depends on storage. Fuel is not like gas and can be stored properly without issues. In a 5 gallon jug, I would use it up. That is not a very good way to store fuel.

I have 30 gallons in 5 gallon jugs at the farm and have never had a problem. I add an oz. of algaecide to each jug when I fill them and rotate the stock as I refuel. The jugs have tight caps and Diesel does not evaporate. It is common for fuel to be a year old before being used.

I'm just curious. Instead of keeping that many jugs why not get a drum and a hand pump or a small bulk tank? looks like that would make life much easier.

There is no harm in running #1 in the summertime. USE IT!

It may seem so, but for my situation the jugs are by far the easiest solution. At one time I had a 250 gallon tank there but my usage didn't justify it plus scheduling a delivery was virtually impossible. I sold it. My property is 46 miles away from home so no easy way to transport a drum empty and then back full, plus when it is empty I have no fuel. The JD has no FEL and there are times when it is the only tractor there. As it is, it's a simple matter to bring 1-2 empties home and back when filled.

That's why I asked. Each person has different needs and if jugs fit the bill for you that's what I would use. I had to use a 5 gallon jug when I had my tank off my M for repair. I was thinking how much I hated it and that was only one jug. Filling my bulk tanks is easy. I just call my fuel guy and in a couple days he brings what I ordered. 200 gallons or more has no delivery fee so that's what works for me.
