Hi, all-

My BX-23D does not shut off when I turn off the ignition switch.

I need a new battery and have to jumpstart my tractor and I’m wondering if a dead battery could keep my tractor from shutting off?

The fuses in the battery compartment all test good with my multi-meter.

Also, my fuel & temperature gauges & hour meter do not work.

I’m not sure how everything fits together electrically…

Best,

Chris

yes. you need battery voltage in order for the engine stop solenoid to kill the engine. you could manually close it if necessary. I added a ziptie to my old BX23 in order to kill the engine if the fuse ever went out on me as it did once before.

Get a new battery.

Sounds like you have other issues going on there with the other dash gauges not working. Keep in mind the battery is a "shock absorber" for your electrical system. Voltage spikes coming out of an alternator with an open or no battery can get ugly. Is it charging at all? What is the battery voltage with it running? Did you check all connections and grounds for tightness?

The system is more complicated than just applying voltage to the engine stop solenoid.

When the key is turned to OFF, a momentary voltage is sent to the stop solenoid through a "Timer Relay."

This timer relay applies power for a few seconds which is designed to be long enough for the engine to stop..

You cannot apply voltage to the stop solenoid for a long time or it will fail and further, you do not want it drawing power from the battery as the tractor sits not running hence the timer relay.

I know you said you checked fuses but go back and make certain the fuse holders are actually transmitting power. To have two conditions, Non stop and no dash at the same time certainly points to a fuse issue.

Jumping a weak battery is bound to cause problems over time.

the alternator should produce enough juice to operate the shut off solenoid. You may also have a bad solenoid
At first look this seems reasonable, but it may not actually be the case.

Granted the alternator may supply enough voltage when the engine is running to activate the fuel cut off solenoid. But the voltage drops to zero as the engine stops turning. As voltage decays it is possible that the fuel cut off solenoid opens again before the engine stops, and the fuel flows again with the engine returning to its normal run state.

I assume if this were the case, the OP would hear a slight hesitation from the engine when the key was turned to the off position, as the engine slowed and picked up RPMs again.

The engine should not start if it was totally shut down. I saw some shut of solenoids on e-bay at a good price

The solenoid only works to shut down the engine. It does not inhibit starting if it is working normally.

The OP has an issue with stoping the engine, not starting it.
