I have an Kubota L185 less than 700 hours. Between the exaust pipe flange and the exaust manifold there is a small hole in the bottom of the gasket. Problem is, it spits out engine oil though the hole. Runs on one cylinder and smokes. When I increase the engine speed it starts firing the back cylinder. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks, Eldon

Hello Eldon. I don't have that much diesel experienc but I have been a mechanic for some thirty-odd years. Sounds like maybe a broken oil ring. Hopefully not but...

If a cylinder does not fire it can pull up oil past the rings. More oil also if there is a broke ring, failed head gasket letting oil pressure through it or a cracked head.
The biggest cause of mechanical problems in the L175/185 is overheating due to lack of cooling.

Also check your compression release adjustments and make sure the lack of firing is not from compression loss.

How much blowby do you have? I would expect the cylinder that doesn't fire has bad rings or worse.

The blowby didn't seem that bad. Sure hoping it is not the rings. When I find out for sure I will post to let everyone know what I found.
Thanks

Once the head was off, I found rust around the top of the cylinder wall, from the blown head gasket.
I placed 15-40w engine oil on top of the pistons, it was still there after seven + days. Tempature was up to around 80 degrees.
I have replaced the head, torqued it down, gave it a good work out for several days, it has over 700 hours on it now, and it seems to have taken care of the problem.

Thank you all for your responce,

Can the head gasket be reused?

No.
There is only one head gasket made that can be reused, to the best of my knowledge, and that is by "Cometic". All others will not reseal on a second crush, (install) and usually the gasket will not come off in one piece anyway.

Eldon,
I have the same tractor and I'm about to replace the head, my question is if you can tell me the torque specks for the head and rocker valve assembly. I have yet to find this out. Any help would be grateful, thanks.
