Even after working the machine for hours the temperature gauge barely moves off C. I have replaced the thermostat. Upper hose hot when running so the engine is heating up. When I remove the lead to the temperature sensor and short it to the frame the temperature gauge moves to H. I have read other posts suggesting there is a calibration issue wherein the temperature read by the sensor is not being accurately displayed by the gauge. I don't really want to purchase a new sensor if this will not fix the problem. Any advice/ similar experience is appreciated.

Paul,

welcome to the forum.

So --- best thing to do here is this, buy you an INFRARED thermometer and point to several points along the cooling system.

Where the thermostat is located

Top of radiator neck

Bottom of radiator neck

You should be around 200 F (94C) at the top of the radiator - if much below that, you may want to block of a portion of the radiator to get it to temp.

Bottom neck should be about 100 F (38 C) less than top - maybe even more.

You need to really work the machine to get an accurate set of numbers - running it at idle for 20 minutes will not get you the info you want.
