Put the bucket against a tree while on loose dirt and slowly push to see if the wheels are turning.
If you don't like that idea put your bucket down until your front tires are elevated, bucket curled up a bit at front edge, then go forward and watch your front tires both in 2wd and in 4wd to make sure all is good.

Claude,

I get stuck all the time when facing downhill with a load in my bucket. It takes either dropping the load or switching into 4WD to back out. If you have a slight downhill area on your property, pick up something heavy with the bucket and point the machine down the hill. When you try to back out in 2WD, you'll see the rear tires spin. Then try 4WD and see if you get good engagement.

If your 4WD is truly inoperative, either pull the machine out and dump the load or drive through the slope and out. You may have to dump the load and back out. It doesn't take much of a slope to try this. Maybe 10-15% is enough to transfer the CG on my L3800.

I run in 2WD almost exclusively using 4WD to get me unstuck.
