will that kit do both or just one?

this maybe a dumb question, but would it be cheaper to take them to shop? Generally speaking?
One cylinder. Kubota parts pricing is unpredictable, the kit for the same location on my L35 is about $50.

The answer to the second question is a little murkier. I overhauled a couple of cylinders early on, when the kits were cheaper and available from Kubota. If you're in this for the long haul and want to do it yourself, there are a couple of tools that facilitate the job: a face pin spanner (assuming your glands have face holes) and a seal tool for the rod seal. Neither of these is absolutely necessary. You need a sturdy (maybe 3/4" drive) wrench to remove the piston nut, some of mine were tight. Seems like the kits I needed later on got expensive or NLA, so I started taking them to a little shop about 20 miles away. I usually loosen the glands and clean them up before removing them; but if I call early in the day and he's not busy, he gets right on them while I kill a couple of hours looking around town, and he charges around $100 P & L.
